The Avtai Sain Khaan, the descendant of Chinggis khan golden tribe founded the first Buddhist monastery Erdenezuu by the ancient capital Karakorum city ruin in 1586. The monastery is surrounded by 108 stupas and it is built by traditional Mongolian urban planning. It was the biggest monastery of Mongolia, in 1872 there were 62 temples and 500 buildings with about 10.000 lamas. Erdenezuu is one of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape World Heritage’s site. The monastery is a fascinating complex of Buddhist architecture, preserving the culture, custom, beliefs and Buddist memorials in Asia. It was destroyed by communists in 1939, but in 1944 the remaining temples and buildings were protected by the state.
