Perched high on the windswept roof of northern East Asia, Mongolia is an unending horizon of raw, high-altitude wilderness. Raised 1,500 meters above sea level and locked safely away from any ocean, this colossal realm stretches across an impressive 2,400 kilometers from east to west and 1,260 kilometers from north to south, carved between the giants of Russia and China. To the far west, the majestic Altai Mountains surge skyward to 4,300-meter peaks, creating a dramatic natural fortress. This alpine domain doubles as a living apothecary rich in wild medicinal herbs like golden Seabuckthorn, and serves as the final, precious refuge for the mysterious and critically endangered Gobi bear. Moving toward the country's heartland, the Khangai Mountains shape the landscape, giving rise to rare, roaring waterfalls and lush river valleys that slice through the dry plateau. Further north, the terrain deepens into a sea of dark pine and larch—the quiet, ancient boreal forests of the Taiga. Then, everything yields to the south. Here, the legendary Gobi Desert—the fourth largest on Earth—unrolls across the horizon in an unbelievable expanse of wind-carved dunes, gravel plains, and absolute stillness.
