The Khustai Reserve (Hustain Nuruu) is a special protection area located in the southwestern part of the Khentii Mountains, about 100 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar city. Among the various wild animals that inhabit this area, there is a wild horse called "Takhi". Takhi was last recognized and registered as a member of the equine genus from a scientific point of view in 1881. Completely extinct in 1969, it was revived in 1992 when it was returned to the Takhi's homeland, the Khustai Mountains. A safe and comfortable natural environment is necessary for the Takhi to become habituated, and as a result, Takhi and other species have increased in number and migrated to the Khustai Sanctuary. For example, the number of red deer increased from 50 in 1992 to 1,300, the number of talbagans (marmots) increased from 9,000 to more than 20,000, and there were also migrations of macaque gazelles and male wild sheep that had never existed before. The barren ranch was able to recover. 16 Takhi were first returned to their birthplace on June 5, 1992, and since then 68 have been returned in four deliveries, increasing to over 330 today, the last wild Takhi in the world. It is a region of great nature, where people live.
