Orkhon Waterfall

Orkhon/Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall

Ulaan Tsutgalan, also known as Orkhon Waterfall, is one of Mongolia’s most spectacular natural landmarks, located in the Orkhon Valley of Övörkhangai Province. Formed where the Ulaan River plunges over a basalt cliff, the waterfall drops approximately 20 meters into a rugged gorge surrounded by volcanic rock, green valleys, and forested hills.

The waterfall was created by ancient volcanic activity and later shaped by the flow of the Orkhon River system, giving the surrounding landscape its distinctive rocky terrain. During the summer months, when rainfall and river levels are highest, Ulaan Tsutgalan becomes especially impressive, with powerful cascades rushing through the gorge. In winter, the waterfall transforms into a striking formation of ice and snow.

The surrounding Orkhon Valley is renowned for its wide grasslands, rivers, forests, and archaeological remains, making Ulaan Tsutgalan an excellent destination for experiencing Mongolia’s natural and cultural landscapes together. Visitors can hike around the gorge, enjoy panoramic views, photograph the waterfall, and explore the peaceful countryside surrounding this iconic landmark.
