Saikhan Khutul is a picturesque natural landmark in Selenge Province, located near Mongolia’s northern border with Russia. Once known as Temeen Khuzuutiin Khutul, the area is said to have received its present name after Mongolian military leader D. Sükhbaatar admired the beauty of the landscape.
One of the area’s most striking features is the confluence of the Orkhon and Selenge Rivers. Here, the two great rivers come together before continuing northward toward Lake Baikal, creating a beautiful meeting point surrounded by forests, hills, and open landscapes.
Saikhan Khutul also carries stories from Mongolia’s modern history. A nearby cave, traditionally known as Sain Ersiin Kheeriin Ger, is associated with a story of Sükhbaatar taking shelter there during a sudden rainstorm while traveling toward Khiagt.
